3 simple tips to get the most out of your wash day

Your wash day sets the tone for your hair, it’s the beginning of your routine. I find that we learn how to wash our hair from a young age and do it the same way for the years to come. But it’s likely that you aren’t taking full advantage of your wash day. These three tips, along with our video, will show you how to get your products to work hard for you. Let’s dive in!

1. Apply shampoo directly to your scalp

Applying shampoo directly to your scalp ensures your scalp is getting the full lather benefit. How do you do this? Pour shampoo into your hand and use your other hand to scoop a small amount of shampoo and apply it directly to your scalp. Ensure you cover your full scalp and then get lathering with our shampoo brush.

Your first shampoo won’t bubble much because it’s lifting dirt off your scalp. Your second round of shampoo applied the same way will give you a lot more lather and is a good indication that your scalp is clean. Both times, support the shampoo with a shampoo brush to get a nice deep clean, and bit of a massage for your scalp.

This method guarantees that you’re applying shampoo throughout your scalp, especially the parts that we sometimes miss like the nape (back of your neck) and the very top of your head. Your scalp will feel clean and fresh.

2. Squish to condish

This method of conditioning forces even more moisture into your hair to keep it hydrated. An especially important strategy for those with texture and curls. How does it work? Usually, we rake conditioner through our hair and leave it on for a little bit and wash it out. The problem with this method is you’re not getting every strand and you’re not forcing that conditioner into your hair. This is where “squish to condish” comes from, squishing conditioner into your hair.

After cleansing your hair, squeeze out excess water and add in your conditioner. You want your hair to feel slippery like seaweed. Gently detangle your hair and then get “squishing”. If you have long hair, you can flip your head upside down and start squishing, if you have shorter hair (like in the video) tilt your head to the side and squish.

When it comes time to rinse out the conditioner collect water in the palms of your hand and squish the water in to remove the conditioner, keep doing it until the conditioner is out of your hair.

3. Ditch the cotton towel

Whether your hair is straight, wavy, curly, textured doesn’t matter. A cotton towel is too abrasive for your hair and increases the chances of frizz. Go for a microfiber towel, or a soft t-shirt when drying your hair, it’s way gentler and won’t frazzle your hair cuticle. And of course, do not rub your hair dry. Just blot and wrap in the towel.
