An itchy scalp is not normal

Say it again, “an itchy scalp is not normal”. An itchy scalp is trying to tell you that something is not right and needs attention. A healthy scalp feels fresh, no bumps, no flakes, and no itching. If you feel any of these symptoms, then it’s time to address it before it develops into anything further.

Why is your scalp itchy?

It could be for any of the following reasons:

  1. Your hairstyle is too tight
  2. You have scalp buildup
  3. Your scalp is dry
  4. You are reacting to a hair product or service
  5. Dandruff
  6. Seborrheic Dermatitis (resulting in a more severe version of dandruff)

Here are some tips to avoid itchy scalp

Do a pre-shampoo (pre-poo) treatment for your scalp

Apply an oil, like our Scalp Elixir, onto your scalp and massage it in. You want to pick a scalp oil that has a balance of terpenes and rich carrier oils so it can moisturize AND penetrate your scalp to deliver benefits to your hair follicles too. Our Scalp Elixir also contains strong antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties thanks to oils like rosemary, thyme, black seed, green tea, sesame oil and castor oil.

Do not go beyond one week without washing your hair

Keeping your scalp clean is so important in your scalp health and the overall health of your hair. The golden rule is: Shampoo is for your scalp, conditioner is for your hair. This ensures your scalp is clean and your hair is moisturized. Take your wash routine one step further by adding a Shampoo Brush. Our Shampoo brush is all-silicone, and it gives you a thorough but gentle clean…and a bonus head massage in the shower :)

Wash your hair with lukewarm (not hot) water

Hot water strips your hair and scalp of moisture. Lukewarm water helps to loosen debris and is a gentle temperature for your hair.

Do not wear your hair in tight braids or hairstyles

This can give a burning/itchy sensation to the scalp which has long-term consequences

Check if you are allergic to certain hair products

This could be hair dye, leave in conditioner, dry shampoo etc. Remove the product from your regimen and see if your reaction reduces

When should you consult a doctor?

When the itchiness is accompanied by hair loss, pain, sores or intense itching, it’s time to see a doctor. For dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis you might need to incorporate a topical treatment that includes pyrithione zinc, keratolytics or antifungal creams. Consult with your doctor
