How to prevent hair breakage

Maybe you’re trying to grow your hair long, maybe you’re just trying to grow it a little. But your hair is breaking, or its just looking a bit…frazzled at the ends. Damaged ends comes in various forms whether it's breakage, split ends, knotting, a raised cuticle and cuticle loss.

We’re going to give you 5 key things to do to protect your ends.

But before we get into the tips. There are two important points you should know

IMPORTANT POINT 1

The ends of your hair are the oldest and therefore the most fragile part of your hair. For example, if you have shoulder length hair, your ends could be 2-3 years old

IMPORTANT POINT 2

Your hair is dead. Once your hair breaks through your scalp, it is dead. Meaning it has no way of repairing itself if there is any damage caused. And it also can’t react to any products to “heal” itself.

Taking these two important points into account, it is best to be as proactive with your hair care so that it becomes easier to manage your hair. Here are five tips to help:

1. Always condition your hair

Apply conditioner to your hair after shampooing. Do a deep conditioner once a week or whenever you feel like your hair needs it. And always apply a leave-in conditioner.

2. Be gentle when brushing your hair

Detangle with a wide tooth comb and brush your hair starting at the ends and working your way up. If you have curly or coily hair, detangle when you condition your hair in the shower  or when you have leave-in conditioner in your hair.

3. If you heat style, use a heat protectant

Heat damage is a big contributing factor to damaged ends. If you do blow dry or straighten your hair, you must apply a water-based heat protectant to your hair. Heat protectants work to distribute the heat evenly which reduces damage to your hair.

4. Apply a light hair oil to your ends

Use a hair oil that contains hydrolyzed keratin, like our Nourishing Hair Oil. This way you have the light oils that condition and moisturize your hair, and you have the hydrolyzed keratin which can penetrate even low porosity hair to protect it from damage. It is also formulated so that you only need a tiny amount for your hair, while still enjoying the benefits

5. Sleep on a satin pillowcase

You’ll be surprised how much damage a cotton pillowcase can cause to your hair while you’re sleeping. Cotton is absorbent, meaning it takes away the oils on your skin and face which means you wake up with drier skin and hair. Cotton is also slightly abrasive, so as you sleep there is a bit of friction caused between your hair and the pillowcase.

Satin on the other hand is non-absorbent so the moisturizing oils on your face and hair remain in place. And it is soft and slippery so there is no friction between your hair and the pillowcase. A small change that has such great benefits.

Lastly, what can you do if you have split ends?

Nothing, the only solution to split ends are scissors.
