How to Scalp Oil for Success

Scalp oiling is the bees knees. It’s an opportunity to treat your scalp > which will inevitably benefit your hair follicles > which will help you produce healthier hair > which will be easier to take care of > which will make your life easier. You get the point. We want to make sure you’re doing it correctly. So, without wasting any more time, let’s walk through how you are going to scalp oil for SUCCESS.

1. Choose the Right Oil for Your Scalp Needs

Not all scalp oils are created equal. Depending on your hair and scalp concerns, some oils will be more beneficial than others:

  • Dry Scalp: Opt for heavier oils like castor oil or coconut oil to lock in moisture.
  • Oily Scalp: Lightweight oils like sunflower oil mimic natural sebum and balance oil production.
  • Dandruff-Prone Scalp: Antifungal oils like rosemary and thyme essential oil can help combat flakes.
  • Hair Growth Goals: Rosemary oil, thyme and pumpkin seed oil stimulate circulation and promote growth.

By the way, ALL the above ingredients (and more), are found in the Scalp Elixir :)

2. Apply Oil to a Clean Scalp

For best results, apply scalp oil to a scalp that isn’t overloaded with product or dirt. This means…we want you to stick to a consistent wash routine of washing your hair at least once a week. Oiling a dirty scalp can trap dirt, product buildup, and sweat, leading to clogged follicles and irritation. Not good.

NOTE: If you haven’t washed your hair in a few weeks then we would recommend that you wash first and then apply.

3. Use the Right Amount

A little goes a long way! Over-oiling can lead to buildup, greasiness, and even scalp irritation. And most importantly, more oil doesn’t mean you’re getting more benefit. You want your scalp to absorb the scalp oil and there is a limit to how much it can absorb. Your scalp shouldn’t be dripping with oil it should simply feel moisturized.

4. Massage for Maximum Absorption

Massaging your scalp after applying oil boosts blood circulation and ensures the oil penetrates the scalp effectively. Use your fingertips or a scalp massager to gently massage in circular motions for 3–5 minutes.

5. Let the Oil Work Its Magic

Leave the scalp oil on for an hour or up to overnight. Don’t be so concerned about which is better, we want you to incorporate this routine so that it suits your schedule. So if leaving it for an hour suits your schedule, do that. If you want to leave it overnight because you want to wash your hair in the morning, do that.

6. Be gentle With Your Hair

Your scalp will be very relaxed after a scalp oiling session which means your hair follicles are more relaxed too. This is not the time to do a slick bun or any other tight hairstyle because you will pull the hair out. You need to wear a nice lose hairstyle to protect your hair. Do not, I repeat, do not, do any of those slick back hairstyles you see on social media post scalp oiling.

7. Wash It Out Properly

We believe that whether you have scalp oiled or not, you should always double cleanse. And especially when you scalp oil, it’s important to ensure you remove the oil completely. Double cleansing is going to give you that breathable scalp feeling that you get from a salon visit, which we love :)

8. Maintain a Consistent Routine

Do you expect to go to the gym once a month and see results? That’s the same concept with scalp oiling. Scalp oiling is most effective when done consistently.

Aim for 1–2 times a week to maintain your scalp health.

If you are facing scalp issues such as itchiness, dryness, hair loss or want to encourage hair regrowth then we recommend scalp oiling 2-3 times a week.

Bonus Tip: Pair Oiling with Healthy Habits

Scalp health goes beyond oiling—hydration, a nutrient-rich diet, and reducing stress all contribute to better hair growth and scalp condition.

In Conclusion

Scalp oiling is a very powerful routine to incorporate into your hair care routine. It gets to the source so that you are addressing your healthy hair goals from the beginning. Even if you aren’t facing any scalp issues, scalp oiling is a perfect preventative step in ensuring your scalp remains nice and healthy.
