Three things you should not do to your scalp

Your scalp is the foundation for your hair. A comprised scalp will result in compromised hair.

To keep your scalp and hair healthy, it's important to avoid certain habits that can damage the scalp. In this article, we'll explore the three most common scalp care errors we see, and what to do instead. Let’s get into it!

1. Waiting too long before washing your hair

The scalp is a complex ecosystem that contains a delicate balance of oils, bacteria, and yeast. Limiting your hair wash schedule can disrupt this balance and cause inflammation which then results in itching, flaking, and potentially hair thinning.

What to do instead? Washing your hair at least once a week helps to remove excess oils, dirt, and other impurities, allowing the scalp to breathe and promoting the growth of healthy hair.

2. Skipping Shampoo on your wash day

Shampoo is designed to clean your hair by removing dirt, oil, and product buildup. Co-washing, or conditioner washing, only provides moisture to the hair but it doesn’t effectively remove impurities.

Regular use of co-washing can contribute to the scalp buildup that you already have which will not only make your hair appear flat and greasy, but it can also lead to irritation, flaking, and even dandruff.

So while co-washing can be a gentler alternative for those with particularly dry or brittle hair, it should not be used as a replacement for shampooing.

What to do instead? If you are concerned about shampoo drying out your hair. You can look for shampoos that have gentler surfactants like

  • Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
  • Cocamidopropyl betaine
  • Sodium C14-C16 Olefinsulfonate
  • Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate
  • Coco Glucoside

3. Ignoring scalp care

Your scalp is skin, but unfortunately, we don’t treat it the same way we treat the rest of our skin. We also spend more time treating our hair. But a lot of the hair issues that you might face, could in fact be the result of neglecting scalp care. It always best to start your hair care from the “root” ;) and work your way to the rest of your hair.

What to do instead? Do a pre-wash treatment for your scalp, give yourself at least a weekly scalp massage, keep your scalp clean and trust us, you will see the results in your hair over time.
