7 tips to heat style your hair with minimal damage

You love how your hair looks after blow drying or heat styling, but you’re concerned about the damage you might be causing. We’re here to tell you that it’s not necessarily bad to apply heat to your hair, its more about HOW you do it. This week we are going to dive right into our 7 tips to blow dry or heat style your hair while limiting the damage.

1. Your hair should not be dripping wet

Use a microfiber towel or t-shirt to help remove the excess water from your hair. Let your hair air-dry around 70% of the way, and then you can use a blow dryer or diffuser.

2. Always Use heat protection

Heat protection products help to create a shield between your hair and the heat from your styling tools. You need to also make sure that you are applying your heat protection product evenly throughout your hair.

3. Use the right tools

A brush that has a metal base turns your brush into a flat iron, increasing the chance of damage. Opt for one that has a ceramic base.

A fast-drying blow dryer can also help cut down your drying time, limiting the exposure to heat. If you are blow drying your hair straight, use the nozzle attachment. And if you are drying your hair curly, use the diffuser attachment.

4. Avoid high heat

Use lower heat settings on your blow dryer and flat iron/curling iron. The high heat settings can turn your hair dull, frizzy and increases the chance of “over drying”, causing further damage.

5. Avoid repetition

When blow drying, section your hair so that you are not repeatedly drying the same parts of your hair by mistake.

When using heat styling tools like a flat iron or curling iron try to stick to one pass at a time on each section of hair. Multiple passes will cause damage over time.

6. Dry your hair fully

Once you have committed to blow drying your hair, you have to take it all the way to fully dry. Slightly damp hair that has had heat applied to it will get frizzy.

7. Don’t apply heat every day

If you’re washing your hair 2-3 times a week, for example, avoid the temptation to run a flat iron or curling iron through your hair on non-wash days. You’ll be exposing heat on your hair too often causing damage over time. If you’re washing and heat styling your hair every day, then try to give your hair some rest days a couple of times a week.
