Here is how to shorten your wash day

We are big advocates of washing your hair at least once a week. A lot of the times the push back that we get from our curly/coily friends is, “it’s too much work”, “my wash day takes too long” or “I’ve never done that”.

So, we thought, lets tackle this. Let’s find you a wash and go routine that you can be comfortable with and doesn’t make you feel…tired.

Why should you wash your hair at least once a week

  1. Because it is critical for your scalp health
  1. It is a great opportunity to infuse moisture into your hair through water.
  1. Over time it will make you hair more manageable and inherently you will have more fun with it.

Let’s get into the wash and go

We’re going to break this down into three sections, with options where appropriate. This way you can select the one that feels best for you.

Also, we are only discussing your wash and style routine here. But of course, the night before your wash day, considering oiling your scalp and massaging it.

Step 1: Detangling

Wet your hair. Fully saturate it with water. Now you have two options for detangling

Option 1: Start with applying conditioner to your hair and detangle your hair with your fingers and finish the detangling process with a detangling brush (one that is flexible so that it is gentle on your hair)

Option 2: Go straight to shampoo to detangle your hair in the same method as Option 1

Step 2: Washing & Conditioning

Once your hair is fully detangled, now you can focus on cleaning your scalp & hair

Apply shampoo to your scalp and massage the shampoo into your scalp. We strongly recommend adding a Shampoo Brush like ours as you are going to get a thorough clean while still being gentle.

Rinse it out, apply shampoo again to really make sure your scalp is free from debris. On your second shampoo you will notice that it lathers and bubbles up a lot more because now there is less dirt on your scalp (If you selected Option 2 for detangling, you don’t need to apply shampoo a third time)

Finish off with a moisturizing conditioner. Apply the conditioner, you can cover your hair with a shower cap while you wash the rest of your body so the conditioner has time to work into your hair. And then rinse it out fully.

Step 3: Styling & Drying

Now, stay in the shower, we are going to do majority of the styling in the shower.

It’s now time to apply a leave-in conditioner or curl cream. Apply it evenly through your hair. The best way is to apply is in sections. Sometimes you might feel that you need more conditioner, but this can usually be resolved by adding more water instead (luckily you’re in the shower anyway :) ).

Leave-in conditioner applied, now go in with a gel. This will help to really solidify and form those curls.

And you're ready to start drying your hair. You can speed up the drying process by using a diffuser or a drying bonnet. And you’re done.

What can you expect from this routine

Your Day 1 curls will be tighter so your hair may look “shorter” (Hi, shrinkage). As days pass, your hair will loosen a bit, and will start getting more volume.

As this is a shorter routine, you’re going to be more encouraged to wash your hair, and the benefits of that will be plentiful. Your scalp with thrive, it will be clean and, especially if you add a scalp oiling routine the night before, you are going to experience less itchiness, flaking. And when your scalp is healthy, you will see the benefits in your hair.

How to preserve your hair between wash days

Apply a 1-2 pumps of the Nourishing Hair Oil to your ends before you sleep. Please don’t apply more than this. When sleeping, if your hair is long, you can tie a loose bun at the top of your head and sleep on a satin pillowcase.

Your edges might need a bit of touch up here and there, but otherwise that’s pretty much it!

We also have a wash routine that can help plan your wash days which you can read here
